Salient Features of Traffic & Transportation in Delhi Master Plan
Multi Modal Transport System
A single mode like present day bus can not effectively serve the city needs thus, it is envisaged to consist of electrified "Ring Rail", bus transport and MRTS on selected number of corridors.
Ring Rail and Spurs
Land use along Ring Rail are required to be restructured to enhance compatibility.
Mass Rapid Transit System
MPD 2001 envisaged MRTS on high capacity corridors, based on detailed studies D.M.R.C. has drawn up proposals for various MRTS Routes in Delhi. Work is under progress for phase I.

Bus
- Route pattern need to be restructured.
- Focus to be pointed on central area rather than to peripheral road.
- Feeder bus services interconnecting Ring Rail with residential areas to be introduced.
- Number of Public Transport Buses to be increased.
Bicycle
- To solve the cycle movement problem and to provide safe environment.
- To provide fully segregated cycle track by adjusting road section and making use of "Nallah".
- Partially segregated cycle routes where physical conditions pose difficulty.
- To improve conditions by traffic management measures in areas like Walled City, Sadar Bazar and Karol Bagh for cyclists.
Further Studies have been done by IIT on behalf of GNCTD. This study has recommended the following:
- Laxmi nagar to Cannaught place via Vikas Marg, ITO, Sikandara road, Mandi house and Barakhamba Road.
- Wazirabad Road from Wazirabad Bridge to Border.
- Madangir to ITO along existing nallah, Tito Marg, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and Mathura Road.
- Vikaspuri to Connaught Place along Nazafgarh Drain, Patel Road Extension, Pusa Road, Punchkuin Road.
- Marginal bandh road from Wazirabad Road to ITO Chungi.
Proposed Major Cycle Track:
- Mehrauli Badar Pur Road - ITO ( 13 Km.)
- G.T.Road (Shahdara) - Vikas Marg (5 Km.)
- Preet Vihar to Connaught Place (10 Km.)
- Paschim Puri / Vikas Puri to Connaught Place (16 Km.)
- Shahdara to Chandani Chowk (5 Km.)
- Pankha road redevelopment/ restoration.
Rail
Caters to inter-city and intra-city movements, as per MPD - 2001
- Intra-City movement should have priority.
- The Ring Railway Stations be provided with proper approaches from main road.
- Some existing Ring Rail Stations to be shifted for effective use and easy reach of commuters.
- EMU services be provided between Gurgaon and Kirti Nagar (providing broad gauge link).
- IGI Airport be linked by Broad Gauge line.
- Shift meter gauge terminal from Delhi main Railway Station to the proposed Integrated Transport Terminal on Bharthal (Dwarka).
Roads
Taking into account the land use pattern and the Road System hierarchy, the recommended R/W are:
- 60 to 80 M (within urban limits)
- Min. R/W 100 M (outside urban limits)
- NH1 & NH8 to be taken up on priority.
Primary Roads
- R/W 60 M within urban limits (MPD - 1962).
- R/W 80 M in Urban Extension
- For High Volume Capacity & High Speed ( About 60 km/h)
- To be Access - Controlled.
Primary All Purpose Roads
- R/W 45 within urban limits M- 81.
- R/W 60 M in Urban Extension.
- For High Volume capacity & Speed (About 50 km/h.)
- To be allowed Mass - Transport - Routes.
Primary Collector
- Min. R/W 30 M. within urban limits
- Min. R/W 40 M in Urban Extension.
Secondary Collector
- Min. R/W 18 - 24 M. within urban limits
- Min. R/W 28 M in Urban Extension (Including Cycle Track)
Local Streets
- R/W 12 M and 20 M.
- R/W 8 M for Cycle Track plus 25 M to 35 M (Ave. 30 M) green strip in UE..
- Cycle Tracks, typically to cut across through residential, commercial, industrial and facility areas - in UE Area.
- Metropolitan Passenger Terminal
For Integrated intra and inter-city passenger movement four Terminals are proposed:
- TYA - Anand Vihar
- South Delhi - Okhla
- West Delhi - Dwarka - Bharthal/Bijwasan
- North - Holambi Kalan
- Secondary Entry to New Delhi Railway Station & Delhi Main Railway Station
- To implement Road - cum - Rail terminal by integrating ISBT & Delhi Railway Station.
- To make available land by shifting Delhi College of Engineering.
- Previously (MPD - 1962) earmarked area for 2nd Entry be developed as per Walled - City Urban - Renewal Policy.
- Integrated Freight Complex
For integration of goods movement by Road & Rail freight complexes are recommended. The sites in four directions are at:
- Madan Pur Khadar (NH-2)
- Patpar Ganj (NH-24)
- Holambi Kalan G.T. Road (NH-1)
- Bharthal (NH-8).
- The International Airport to be linked to other parts of Delhi and its urban extension facilitating fast movement.
- MPD - 2001 also indicates development of grade separators at various intersections.
- Walled City Special Zone
Walled-City shows characteristics of continuous flow of traffic at low speed but high volume, thus following is recommended :
- For the congested area to introduce a medium capacity Mass Transit System at low speed, high frequency - like Tramways for selected routes.( a stretch of approx. 10 Km.)
- Restraint on use of private modes inside the walled city.
- Provisions of parking at selected interchange points.
