'River Yamuna'

Present Scenario

• Total length 48 km, total area 97 sq. km, width 1.5 to 3 km
• Urban stretch 22.4 km, area covered in urban stretch 41.87 sq. Km.
• Area under water 16.45 sq km, depth dwindles to 1.1 m & AVG.Water depth during floods 7.5 m.
• The area is intersected by 7 major rail & road bridges.
• 19 major drains dump waste water into the river.
• Najafgarh drain is the largest and the most
  polluting of all drains.

Issues : River Yamuna

• High pollution levels & dwindling volumes in the river.
• River front as an asset, a frontage & an integral part of the city,it has been treated as a backyard & segregated the city into two distinct parts.
• Relationship between the river ecology & the existing landuse.

'Lung Spaces'

Present Scenario

Regional Park / Ridge

• Northern and Central Ridge is a reserved forest and afforested with indigenous species.
• Southern Ridge is being planned for various uses like wildlife sanctuary, shooting range, golf course, race course, gardens etc.
• Continuity of ridge in the NCR is not maintained.

Landmark developments are Hauz Khas District Park, Swarana Jayanti Park in Rohini, Paschim Vihar District Park, Sanjay Lake Park at Trilokpuri, Sri Fort District Park and Bharat Vandana Park at Dwarka(proposed).

MPD-2001 has been highly successful in making Delhi one of the most green city. About 19% green cover is existing in the city.

'Natural Heritage'

Issues : Natural Heritage

• Intervention is required to stop further deterioration of lung spaces like ridge, river and water bodies etc.
• Rationalisation of space standard of parks and play areas
• Quality of open spaces needs to be improved.

'Built Heirtage'

Present Scenario

The Built Heritage includes:

Archeological Sites, Historical Monuments (protected / unprotected), Conservation Areas/ Heritage Zones.

• Survey conducted by Archeological Survey of India in 1911 identified 1321 historical monuments, sites and buildings in Delhi.
• Surviving structures : 1208 (Listed by INTACH, notified by MCD as heritage buildings)
• ASI: 166 (Centrally protected under ASI ACT)

NDMC: 112 (Heritage Value Buildings)

State Government : 150 monuments under the State list for which legislation by Delhi ovt. is being prepared.

Issues : Built Heritage

• The remaining monuments are receiving no protection and hence these are under serious threat of being extinguished over a period of time.
• Multiple Authorities e.g. ASI, Archeological Deptt. of GNCTD, MCD, NDMC, DDA etc. Which are looking after various monuments, heritage buildings under their respective jurisdictions.
